Connection troubleshooting
Slow internet? Find the cause first.
A faster plan will not always fix weak WiFi or lag under load. Use these five checks to narrow down the problem and choose your next step.
Get a clean baseline
Pause streaming, cloud backups, and large downloads. Keep the same device and note whether a VPN is enabled. Run a full test and record download, upload, idle latency, and loaded latency.
Run a full speed test →Compare WiFi with Ethernet
Repeat near your router, then over Ethernet if available. A large improvement suggests a wireless coverage or interference issue. Similar results on both connections suggest checking the router, modem, or ISP next.
Compare wired and wireless →Look for lag under load
Good download speed does not rule out lag. If loaded latency rises substantially above idle latency, pause uploads and backups. Check smart queue management on your existing router and retest before buying replacements.
Reduce bufferbloat →Test from the problem room
Use your usual desk, TV, or gaming location. Compare latency and jitter near the router and farther away. Reposition the router in an open central spot and compare available WiFi bands before considering extra access points.
Check connection stability →Collect evidence for your ISP
Repeat under similar conditions at different times, including evening hours. If wired tests remain poor, share your connection report with your ISP along with your plan speed, test time, device, and setup. SpeedIP history stays on this device.

When an upgrade makes sense
Consider additional WiFi coverage when wired performance is healthy but distant rooms remain weak. Consider a faster plan when repeated wired tests reach your current plan limit and your household regularly uses all that capacity. Compare the total cost and compatibility before buying.
