Why Is My Internet Slow at Night?
Separate busy-household traffic from wireless issues and possible ISP congestion with a repeatable evening speed-test checklist.
A single slow evening result cannot tell you why performance changed. Build a small comparison using the same device, setup, and test service at a quiet time and when the problem usually appears.
Keep notes about streaming, backups, VPN use, and whether the test was wired or wireless. Your saved SpeedIP history can be labeled and exported without creating an account.

Download measured to Google, Cloudflare, Netflix, Amazon, and other major CDNs — the networks that actually deliver the web.
Create a comparison you can trust
Use the same device and location for the first comparison. Keep separate labels for different connection types so a daytime wired result is not mistaken for an evening WiFi result.
- Run a daytime baseline and label it with the setup.
- Repeat during the evening problem window on several days.
- Pause your household's heavy transfers for a second evening test.
- Compare download, upload, and latency; retain the original results.
Interpret the pattern carefully
If pausing local activity improves the result, household demand is a useful lead. If only WiFi changes, compare near the router and over Ethernet. If repeated wired tests deteriorate at the same time, ask the ISP to investigate; your evidence still does not prove which upstream component is responsible.
Prepare an ISP support request
Attach your CSV and state your plan's advertised speed, device, wired or wireless setup, problem time, and any application symptoms. Ask about known service issues and the provider's recommended diagnostic procedure. Keep plan speeds and observed test speeds distinct.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does slow internet at night prove ISP throttling?▾
No. Household activity, wireless interference, service issues, and different network routes can produce similar symptoms. Repeat controlled tests and ask your ISP to investigate.
How many tests should I keep?▾
Keep several comparable tests across multiple days, including a quiet baseline and the problem window. SpeedIP stores the latest 20 full tests on this device.
