Fast Internet but Still Lagging?

High Mbps can hide lag. Compare idle latency, loaded latency, and jitter to narrow down gaming and video-call problems.

Download capacity and responsiveness answer different questions. A connection can move a large file quickly while interactive traffic waits. Check latency alongside throughput before assuming you need a faster plan.

Run a full test, then follow the checklist below. SpeedIP measures an HTTP route to its test service; a game's own server may have a different route and latency.

Download measured to Google, Cloudflare, Netflix, Amazon, and other major CDNs — the networks that actually deliver the web.

Read idle and loaded latency together

Idle latency is the baseline without the test's transfer load. Loaded latency is measured during transfers. A large increase is a reason to investigate queueing or congestion; it does not by itself identify the router or prove the ISP is at fault.

  1. Save a quiet baseline and label it with the device and connection type.
  2. Check whether loaded latency rises even when idle ping looks normal.
  3. Repeat over Ethernet, keeping the device and test service the same.

Change one variable at a time

Pause backup uploads and game updates, then compare. If the issue occurs only on WiFi, check coverage. If it persists over Ethernet during heavy transfers, review your router's documented queue-management options. Avoid changing several settings together—you will lose the useful comparison.

  1. Retest after pausing background traffic.
  2. Compare the game's reported ping with SpeedIP; they measure different routes.
  3. Record the setup before and after any router change.

What to send to support

Export labeled tests with the time, connection type, and whether other devices were active. Include the application's own error or ping reading separately. Do not claim that a browser test measured ICMP packet loss or diagnosed a specific failing network hop.

These sources offer general context. SpeedIP's checklist and measurements do not certify a specific application or diagnose an individual network hop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a faster plan fix lag?▾

It may help if your household exhausts the available capacity, but it will not automatically fix wireless coverage or an application's server route. Compare conditions first.

Does a low SpeedIP ping guarantee low game ping?▾

No. The game uses its own server and route. A browser test is a useful comparison, not a measurement of every application.
