Ping Test

Measure network latency and jitter to our server — 25 samples, no signup.

Ping benchmarks by use case

What counts as "good ping" depends on what you're doing. Real-time apps need lower latency than streaming.

Use caseExcellentAcceptablePoor
Competitive gaming< 15 ms15–40 ms> 60 ms
Casual gaming< 30 ms30–80 ms> 120 ms
Video calls (Zoom, Teams)< 30 ms30–80 ms> 150 ms
Streaming (Netflix, YouTube)< 100 ms100–200 ms> 500 ms
General web browsing< 100 ms100–300 ms> 500 ms

Ping vs jitter — why both matter

Average ping tells you the typical round-trip time. Jitter tells you how consistent that time is. A connection with 30 ms average ping and 25 ms jitter can swing between 5 ms and 55 ms from packet to packet — audio will cut out, and games will feel rubber-banded even though the average looks fine.

Low jitter (good)

Pings land at 28 ms, 30 ms, 29 ms, 31 ms — steady and predictable. Video calls and games feel smooth.

High jitter (bad)

Pings swing: 15 ms, 80 ms, 22 ms, 95 ms — unpredictable. Calls stutter; games lag and snap even when average ping looks acceptable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good ping?▾

Under 20 ms is excellent — imperceptible in games and calls. 20–50 ms is good for most online activities. 50–100 ms is acceptable for casual gaming and browsing. Above 100 ms you will notice lag in competitive games and choppy video calls.

What is jitter?▾

Jitter is the variation in ping over time. A connection with 30 ms average ping but jitter swinging between 10 ms and 80 ms will feel worse than a stable 35 ms connection. Under 10 ms jitter is excellent; above 30 ms you may hear choppy audio on calls.

What causes high ping?▾

Distance to the server, routing hops, Wi-Fi interference, a congested ISP node, and bufferbloat are the main causes. Ethernet usually lowers ping compared to Wi-Fi. Closing background uploads also helps — they compete for the same link that the ping packets use.

How many ping samples does SpeedIP use?▾

The full ping test sends 25 samples. The first 3 are discarded as warmup to let the connection settle. Results show minimum, maximum, average, and jitter so you can see both the typical latency and how consistent it is.

Is this ping test accurate?▾

Yes. SpeedIP pings our edge server using small HTTPS requests — the same protocol your browser uses. Results reflect real-world web latency, not ICMP ping which is often blocked or deprioritized by routers.

How do I lower my ping?▾

Use ethernet instead of Wi-Fi, connect to the closest server for games and apps, close background uploads, and check for bufferbloat (a full SpeedIP speed test grades this). If ping is high on ethernet too, contact your ISP.
