Video Calls Freezing or Dropping?
Diagnose choppy calls with upload and stability checks, a wired comparison, and a repeatable before-and-after test.
A large download number is not enough to explain a choppy call. Check upload capacity and latency stability, then compare the connection in the room where the problem happens.
Run a test before or after the call, rather than during it: a full speed test deliberately creates traffic and can disrupt the conversation. An application's own status page and diagnostics can provide additional context.

Download measured to Google, Cloudflare, Netflix, Amazon, and other major CDNs — the networks that actually deliver the web.
Make a quiet-call comparison
Pause backups and large uploads, then compare a call under normal household use with one during a quiet period. Record symptoms, timing, and whether the issue affects one app or several.
- Check the calling app's service status and update it if appropriate.
- Test upload, idle latency, loaded latency, and jitter outside the call.
- Run the WiFi health check from your usual desk.
- Repeat the same setup over Ethernet when available.
Choose the next step from the evidence
A better wired result points toward investigating the wireless path. A large latency increase during uploads makes pausing background uploads a useful experiment. If only one app fails while other calls work, include app-specific evidence when seeking support rather than buying a new router immediately.
Save a before-and-after record
Label the baseline with your room and connection type. Make one change and label the next test. Export both for support. A successful short test is encouraging but cannot guarantee a long call will remain stable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I run a speed test during an important call?▾
No. A speed test creates traffic that may compete with the call. Test before or afterward and note the setup.
Can SpeedIP identify the cause of every dropped call?▾
No. Browser measurements help compare connection behavior. Application bugs, service outages, device performance, and network routes can also cause problems.
